It is wise to direct your anger towards problems, not people;
to focus your energies on answers, not excuses.
Anger
Are you struggling with anger outbursts or excessive rage? If so, you are not alone. Aggression, both verbal and physical, is on the increase in our society.
Anger is an instinct essential for our survival but excessive anger can affect our physical and mental health. Being prone to anger is a stronger predictor of dying young than other risk factors such as high blood pressure, smoking or cholesterol. Anger does more harm to the heart than any other emotion. Inappropriate anger not only damages health it can cause misery among relatives, colleagues and innocent bystanders.
The first step is to find out what is causing the angry behaviour. No one is naturally an ‘angry’ person. They are just, temporarily, overcome by anger and can learn how to cease being its victim.
Anger doesn’t just happen, it is a response to something in the environment. So, what is triggering it? Experiencing uncontrollable or excessive anger always means that something is not working well in a person’s life.
Is it related to previous traumatic events that need to be de-traumatised? If not, what elements in the person’s life are causing the anger and need to be re-interpreted?
The Human Givens approach will give you clear and practical advice on how to avoid the common triggers for anger and how to predict anger outbursts in yourself and others.
Human Givens practitioners will show people how to calm themselves down quickly. This is essential as high emotional arousal makes us stupid and stops us from listening to reason.
It will also help them to examine and change their self-talk. Having hostile thoughts only harms us. Furthermore, they will ask the client to look at situations from other people’s perspectives as well as their own. It will also establish a plan of prevention and dispel many unhelpful and inaccurate myths commonly associated with anger.
